Remembrance Day 14

Remembrance Sunday has been an important day for many years now. It is the closest Sunday to Armistice Day – the 11th day, of the 11th month. It was on Armistice day, at 11:11, that World War I was officially over. This year marks 100 years since the start of that war that would become known as ‘the great war’. Never before had conflict been seen on such an immense scale.

Navy Writing Competition

The Navy invite students from all ages to enter a writing competition

On 13 December 2013, the Royal New Zealand Navy will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate. The Battle was the first major allied victory of the war and involved the New Zealand warship HMS Achillies. But it’s also an interesting story in that the Captain of German ship Graf Spee defied orders, scuttling his damaged ship and saving the lives of his crew.

ECT Rescue Helicopter

Our cadets had the opportunity recently to look through the ECT Rescue helicopter.

They asked the pilot all sorts of questions, from “how did you get into aviation” to “how long have you been flying” – even “what sort of weather do you fly in”.

It’s always good seeing youth getting excited about something – and they sure enjoyed this opportunity.

Basic camp 2014

Sunday night marked the end of Operation KEA 2014 for the cadets of 14 Squadron. We run this camp every year as a way to introduce the cadets to disciplined scheduled activities, all while we teach them proper uniform maintenance and administration – right from home ground!

This exercise involved two and a half days of training time, covering everything from uniform maintenance to policy and code-of-conduct information.
